Breach - Week 9 Development Blog

During this week I focused on adding the following segments to my GDD:

  • Art Direction

  • Sound Design

  • Control Scheme


As you may be able to tell this week was mostly spend contributing to perhaps the "less necessary" segments of the document for the creation of my vertical slice but nonetheless is still important when discussing and developing a complete package.


Art Direction

It was important when conceptualising how the game should look that it played into two factors. how it fits with gameplay and how achievable is it. As a result of problem solving and contemplation I landed upon the idea of having the game styled in a similar way to SUPERHOT (2016). Upon reflection I feel that this was a good decision based on the fact that it would allow the gameplay mechanics to shine through and also makes it possible for myself to create assets based on the fact that I have a relatively good understanding of how to use Blender.


Sound Design

This segment is relatively simple in regards to its content. Simply put it outlines the design methodology that should be followed when developing audio for the game in order to keep it consistent and also lists at a base level all of the required audio assets for the game.



Control Scheme

This segment displays how the control scheme of the game should function. I aimed to keep it consistent with other games in the genre in order to make gameplay accessible and easy to understand. It is important that this is achieved as it makes the game open to a larger audience and more satisfying to play in general.


In conclusion, whilst I initially began this week with the idea of finalising the GDD, upon reflection I discovered that this would not be achievable. This was a result of reflecting the segments which I outlined towards the start of the documents development, I found that more segments would be required. Ultimately this pushed back the expected completion time so next week I want to push hard to get the document completed. Next week I am setting myself the task of beginning to create a blockout for the Aviation level. I am opting to focus on this level based on the fact that it offers a somewhat unique gameplay experience by having gameplay take place on a plane.
