Breach - Week 8 Development Blog

This week was spent outlining in the GDD the following:

  • UI

  • Scenarios

  • Level Design


UI

In this segment I displayed how the UI should look whilst in gameplay and the reasons for doing so. With this I aimed to achieve something that is minimalist whilst displaying all key information to the player i.e. objective, health, ammo count etc.


It is important to note however that these designs could be subject to change when it comes down to integrating them into the project.



Scenarios

By the end of the week I landed upon four different "scenarios" or objectives which all provide a different style of gameplay. This will ensure that the game is replayable and gameplay wont grow stale quickly.


The scenarios I designed are:

  • Training Grounds (Tutorial)

  • Hostage Rescue (Use voice commands to rescue all the hostages)

  • Bomb Defusal (Defuse the bombs in the map)

  • Threat Removal (Take out all the enemies in the level)



Level Design

This segment goes hand in hand with the Scenario section of the document as each level should be created with the intent to best represent the gameplay of the objective.


I began with creating a preliminary sketch for each level (seen below) which could later be developed into a properly developed level map and ultimately made into a 3D environment.

In conclusion for this week I feel as though my contributions to the GDD this week are substantial enough to be considered positive. Whilst in comparison to the week prior it may not be as much I feel as though, specifically through the level design section, I have displayed good understanding as to how to design potential levels for the game and from a personal perspective I am happy with the result. Next week I have plans to add the finishing touches to the GDD getting a passable first draft of the document established so that I can begin working on creating the game.
